Dear members of the consultative committee on the safety and welfare of animals used in rodeos in Quebec,

I am writing to you today to share my serious concerns regarding the welfare of animals used in rodeos. Rodeos make a spectacle out of the fear, pain, and stress deliberately inflicted on animals, in addition to exposing them to risk of injury, or even death. It is simply unacceptable to subject animals to psychological and physical suffering in the name of entertainment.

Rodeo events are based on the exploitation of animals’ reactions to pain, fear, and panic and are therefore fundamentally incompatible with animal welfare. Whether it is during bronco riding or calf-roping events, the “show” consists of watching terrified animals thrash about or attempt to flee only to then be physically dominated. In addition to the stress and fear caused at the psychological level, rodeo events also involve the use of coercive tools that cause physical pain or discomfort in order to force animals to perform. There is also considerable risk of injury or death for the animals. Statistics from the Calgary Stampede, one of the largest rodeos in Canada, show that animals are regularly injured and even die during the events, and many more injuries and deaths occur during practice runs which are not reported in any official statistics. Further, horses bred to compete in bucking events, but who don’t qualify, often end up being sent to slaughter because they are raised to be semi-feral and are not generally comfortable or safe around humans. In fact, each year, the Calgary Stampede sends at least twenty horses to slaughter after they fail to qualify for bucking events.

Many places around the world, including England, Wales, Scotland, the Netherlands and the city of Vancouver, have made the choice to ban rodeos, precisely because of the animal welfare concerns they raise.

I ask that the province of Quebec follow this example and prohibit rodeos, once and for all.

Yours sincerely,

"}
